dream

(via {frolic!})

"What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it; boldness has genius, power and magic in it"
- Johann von Goethe

Collin Firth

It's been a long while since I've posted about nerdy guys- you know, those full-of-quirk and has-it-goin-wrong-in-all-the-right-ways kind of guys that we all secretly love? (Well, let's be honest, I'm not so secretive about it... but that's a different story.) Earlier this morning I was looking through the highly entertaining nerd boyfriend blog, and came across a post of Collin Firth- and let me tell you how ecstatic I was. I seem to have an uncanny admiration for him- it's odd, I know, but ask anyone... I swear. It might have something to do with his dreamy accent, hysterically dry sense of humor, classically plain wardrobe, or just general dapperness (I mean, have you seen The King's Speech or A Single Man?!?). Anyways, thumbs up to you, nerdboyfriend.com . And if I may, I'd like to suggest a gent for your next post- I'd die to see Matthew Macfadyen! ...circa Pride and Prejudice???

Holy roly, me, oh my, you’re the apple of my eye

About a week ago I posted the music video of "A Million years" by Alexander of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. We all know that I love Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and anything that stems from them, but I ADORE this father daughter duo cover of "Home". That tiny little girl conveys more emotions that most people under 65 are capable of. I've always said that kids are grossly underestimated, and this video beautifully confirms it. SING IT GIRL!!!!!

The Crossing

Not only is this the coolest in-action photo snapped of the Beatles seconds before the iconic Abbey Road album cover was taken, but did you know that there is a live web feed of the very same Abbey Rd. crosswalk. If you're a Beatles fan and you haven't yet gotten the chance to make the walk yourself, the next best thing is to watch the hundreds of fans that flock there to take those few glorious steps themselves. It's hysterical and heartwarming to see people leap across with child-like joy. They do it in groups, in costumes, in absolute synchronization.... it makes me giddy with happiness! Try it, you'll love it... I swear- The Crossing - Abbey Road Studios.

A lovely cake stand

\
(via etsy)

I hate the rustic style something awful. I even hate the word rustic. I love organic shapes. I like natural mediums. And I can't get enough fresh colors. All of that seems a world away from rustic. To me, I guess, there tends to be something so unoriginally fake in rustic. On that note, I really do love this cake stand.... except, I'd very much rather see it made with the beautifully red and irregularly shaped (and enchantingly so) manzanita wood, or the smooth and creamy (and sometimes peely) birch wood!!! That would be so lovely, and so not rustic. It would be a really simple DIY, too!

Oh, the madness...

...that sweet, sweet madness. This looks like the freest most creatively infused place in all the world- the perfect nest for a gypsy soul. You have to know that something great (or someone great) calls this home....

Nostalgia

"A Million years" by Alexander (of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros).

This song makes me feel like summer is here. I like that. And the video shows exactly the sort of world I imagined all those times I read The Little Prince as a little girl. ...and the nostalgia sets in.

Sticks and mirrors

Oh, be still my little heart.

I couldn't tell you enough how I am obsessed with artist Lee Borthwick.... Everything Borthwick creates is sooo simple and uniform, but still so mesmerizing.

Happy Sun(ny)day

Best advice I've gotten all day long! It's sunny and breezy, and there are a million beautiful things to be thankful for!

Happiness

Sometimes I feel like that too.... but I wouldn't mind being stupid.

Claudine and Mia

Meet Claudine and Mia... Mom, Jenna (from Sweet Fine Day), occasionally posts the sweetest snippets of their conversations and daily adventures. And let me tell you, these girls know how to say it like it is. Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

Claudine “When you’re a grown up, all there is to do is talk and work, drink coffee, eat spicy food and watch kids. Booooring!”

Mia “Sometimes when I get excited I don’t show it. I just wiggle my toes instead.”

Claudine (as she admires her outfit): “ooh, I look so pretty. I love this dress. People are going to see me and say, ‘Hey, I like that kid!’”.

But, my all time favorite quote goes to Claudine:
Claudine (when asked why she is so cute): “Because I have a fat head.”
And so, at this time, I'd like to give Claudine a shout out and say, "Tell 'em girl! Coming from a fellow fat head, embrace it!! We have fat heads and we're fabulous!!!"

Ps. Not only are these girls nauseatingly adorable, they also have a super rad (and smokin') asain momma who owns and runs her own bakery with her husband!!! They totally just jumped ahead a few notches on my cool list...

Tea lovin', skinny dippin' cups

(via likecool)

Most interestingly lovely tea cup (by Ester Horchner) I've ever laid eyes on...

Colorful Sexism

Awesome.

Silly stuff

I like this. A lot.

It's the onion trick story.

I came across a post, recently, that had the funniest/cutest secret about cooking onions. I can't imagine telling it any better than Jenny from Dinner, a love story, so enjoy!
Over the years, I’m sure my mother has told me a lot of stories about Joan, her best friend from college – who I’ve only met a handful of times – but there’s only one that has stuck with me and that I think about almost on a nightly basis. It’s the onion trick story.

When Joan first got married she was expected to cook. Which would’ve been fine except for one problem – she hated to cook. And because this was forty-five years ago, before women actively, purposefully embraced the role of not cooking, she was routinely figuring out ways to pretend she was cooking so her husband wouldn’t be disappointed by her complete apathy (antipathy?) towards the kitchen. This is why she started chucking an onion in a 350°F oven an hour before he came home from work. Even if she had no use for that onion in the meal she would ultimately make and eat, she felt better knowing her husband was walking into a house permeated by the smell that signaled stews and soups, roasts and braises — meals that require clocking some serious hours in the kitchen. I never did find out what happened at dinnertime, when she’d serve him something that was more likely inspired by Peg Bracken or a pouch of Lipton Onion Soup mix.

I love this story so much and have been known to employ Joan’s onion trick at holiday parties that are 100% outsourced. (Is there anything more depressing than showing up to a party and not smelling the food?) I’m also proud to say that I’ve also come up with my very own onion trick over the years, albeit one a little more practical. It goes like this:
When I have no idea what to make for dinner, I start caramelizing an onion and then assume a plan is going to fall into place.

Cause when you cook onion slices over low heat in olive oil for even just 15 minutes, you not only have a delicious, happy aroma wafting through the house, you have the start of something special for dinner. The onions, which get all silky and candy-sweet, can be shoved inside an omelet, heaped on top of pasta with cheese, sandwiched inside a California-style turkey burger. And they can be just the thing to prevent a baked potato dinner from feeling like a trip to the Roy Roger’s fixin’s bar, as outlined in the latest issue of Bon Appetit.

Drowsy

Today is an unintentionally lazy Sunday. So, here are a few posts from around the web.... Enjoy!

If I lived in a barn I would want it to look like this....

If I lived in a warehouse, I would want it to look like this....

Oh, how lavender hot chocolate on a windy day puts me in a windy heaven

"_____ will ______ you"..... fascinating.

Oh, and...
I will never love you more than the drummer of flaming lips
I will never love you more than Woody Allen movies
I will never love you more than the White album of the Beatles
I will never love you more than God only knows

Floor to ceiling love

(via The Selby)

This is amazing!!! There are so many things that I love in this photo. I love that the books are stacked in columns instead of rows. I love that the books are so colorful and the couch is so grey. And I love the spiral staircase.

From Osaka Japan

   The caption read :

"2011.03.12 From Osaka Japan, my family is OK. Thanks.
Please pray for suffering people in disaster areas. My family is OK."

This was uploaded earlier today on Hideaki Hamada's brilliant photostream. When it seems impossible to tear our eyes from live footage, youtube videos, new articles, headlines and updates, it's so nice to get a glimpse of what remains that is good and uplifting, even if it is just one safe family.

We are praying for you, Japan.

Before I die

With chalkboard paint, stencils, and chalk, public intallation artist Candy Chang created sheer inspiration. She transformed an abandoned home in New Orleans into a canvas where people can share (and discover) their dreams. “It’s about turning a neglected space into a constructive one where we can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around us.” I would do a lot of things to go and see this wall right now.

P.S.- Here is a photo-strip of the responses after the first day. They're all beautiful, but here are some of my favorites:

Before I die I want to love recklessly...again.

Before I die I want to cure cancer.

Before I die I want to beat the sense into you!

Before I die I want to marry LL <3

Before I die I want to understand.

Before I die I want to be o.k. with NOT understanding.

Before I die I want to see all the homeless people with homes.

Before I die I want to do it with Robert Doweny Jr. (this one is for my sis :] )

Before I die I want to feel like the only girl in the room.

Before I die I want to enjoy everyday in many ways.

WHAT WOULD YOU WRITE??!?
